A very Infinitesimal amount of a certain kind of alcohol which is generally found in alcoholic beverages can make Caenorhabditis elegans live just double than its original lifetime. Caenorhabditis elegans is a tiny worm widely used in aging studies.
The first author of the study, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry in UCLA, Steven Clarke mentioned that the discovery is extremely unexpected, in fact shocking to them. There are valid reasons for their shock, indeed. It is already scientifically proved that high consumption of alcoholic beverages increases human mortality chances. Alcoholic beverages are also known to have fatal effects on the nervous system of worms which leads them to death.
The members of Clarke’s team – Brian Young, Paola Castro and Shilpi Khare – mentioned, after studying about thousands of the abovementioned worms at their larval stage, that their life span ends after about 15 days and they, surprisingly, can manage to be alive up to 12 days without eating. When they applied the certain kind of alcohol, namely ethanol the worms live for 20 to 40 days.
One of the researchers has asserted that the actual goal of their study was to find out the effect of cholesterol on the worms. We all know that high levels of cholesterol in human blood have deadly effects. They gave those worms cholesterol dissolved in ethanol. After that the life span of the worms expended. According to Clarke, the cholesterol did not play any role in that. This is entirely because of the ethanol.
Researchers have mentioned that the amount of ethanol was so little that it can be compared to one bottle of beer dissolved in hundred gallons of water. Sometimes ago, a number of studies claimed that 1-2 glass of beer or wine every day is beneficial for human heart. And now the present study is also indicating that alcohol at a moderate amount is good for health. But we should keep in mind that the MODERATE amount is very important.
